Syre Wants to Turn Textile Waste Into New Polyester — Fashion Needs to Know Who They Are

Syre is building technology to recover polyester from textile waste, which could reshape a foundational part of how fashion sources its materials. Gore-Tex and Intel show that a component can become a powerful brand in its own right. The question is how visible Syre dares to be.
Polyester is everywhere in fashion, and it has become one of the industry's defining sustainability problems. Sweden's Syre is building technology to recycle polyester from textile waste into new material that can be used again, and Wired UK has named the company one of Europe's hottest startups.
For BBMB, Syre is among the most interesting companies in the entire selection, because the product could change a foundational part of how materials move through the fashion industry. What remains is a branding question: how visible should a materials company actually be to the end customer?
Ingredient brands can become very strong
Gore-Tex and Intel are two classic examples, from entirely different industries, of a component developing brand value of its own. The customer buys the finished product but is also looking for a particular material or a particular technology.
Syre has the opportunity to build something similar in circular polyester. If fashion customers start recognising the name, it adds a layer of credibility to the brands that use the material.
BBMB's recommendation: make Syre visible, but not loud
I would work towards a clearly defined ingredient brand that can sit alongside fashion and sportswear brands without competing with their identity. Certification, labelling and shared storytelling can make the material comprehensible to the consumer as well.
Partnerships should be chosen with great care. A small number of internationally strong partners who genuinely use the technology in a serious way is better than a long series of smaller campaigns where Syre is reduced to a sustainability symbol on a hangtag.
BBMB's focus on fashion, premium positioning and storytelling fits precisely that kind of brand architecture.
Leadership needs to join the fashion conversation
Syre's leadership could also be far more present in international fashion and business media. The materials question is moving from the sustainability department to the boardroom, which makes it a business issue, not only an environmental one.
The company should therefore be as natural a presence on relevant fashion and design stages as at industry conferences. If you intend to change the fabric, you may as well get to know the people who decide what it becomes.
